Q How do I become a resident in Mallorca? A All UK citizens have the right to register (a simple process) for Spanish Residents permit Q What is the cost of living? A Prices in Mallorca have risen over the past few years but food, entertainment, transport, insurance, petrol and medicines are still cheaper than the UK. Electricity is not cheap but remember, short winters mean less heating! Q What about my pensions? A All Dhss pensions can be paid directly to your Spanish bank account Q What about health care? A Ibsalut is the National Health Service of Spain. Simple registration ensures you are allocated a doctor at your local clinic and all the same services and prescriptions are available but without the long wait! Private medical insurance is available and also covers GPs & dentists for considerably less money than in the UK. Q I don't speak Spanish! A No problem, 80% of the Mallorcan/Spanish people speak English. All the banks have English-speaking staff and most will send correspondence & statements in English Calvia council has an English speaking help desk and even has a free Spanish language course Q How will we make friends? A There are many English-speaking societies which organise social events. They include Age Concern, ESRA (English Speaking Residents Association) and the Rotary Club. Q English TV? A No problem, Sky is available in Mallorca. Q What will I do without Tetley tea bags, Heinz ketchup & baked beans? A Many supermarkets in S.W. Mallorca have English products - there is even an English butcher in Pto.Portals where you can buy bacon, sausages, scotch eggs & Yorkshire puds. It would be foolish to say everyone is happy when they retire in Mallorca but the vast majority do appreciate the quality of life and are able to live at a much higher standard than their pensions would allow them in the UK. Once the novelty of sun, beach and affordable eating & drinking wears thin, you will find the ¨Real Mallorca¨ and the benefits that come with it. Music, dancing, art & culture are important to all Mallorquines There are many events, throughout the Island, which are free. Palma plays host to International culture events of all kinds and theatre tickets are affordable (There is usually at least one film showing in English) The museums and art galleries are open 7 days a week. Football enthusiasts will enjoy adopting their ¨local¨ team Real Mallorca and matches are a family event - without the football hooligans. Tennis - the home of Nadal - What more needs to be said? There are English Cricket, Rugger, Snooker, Bridge & Bowls clubs. On a more serious note - Health! The climate is ideal for those creaky bones and all of us feel we have a new lease of life.
